What would you like to do more of?
I would love to have the time to do more pure research - to build things (on the web). To play with the new Google App Engine, and Google Sites. To read blogs, write blog posts, and take part in things.
I would love to have more time to take part in online communities like Vox.
Our adoption of several children has pretty much slashed the amount of "free" time we have, and often I am so tired at the end of a day that I vegitate for a couple of hours and then often go to bed early and flake out. Last night I took the Nintendo DS up with me, and fell asleep before I even opened it.
It's been a week now since I joined Vox, and started joining groups, forging my "neighborhood", reading, commenting and occasionally contributing my own posts.
I hadn't expected it to be so much fun. After the - let's face it, horrendous - experience of MySpace and Facebook, Vox is a breath of fresh air. The balance between structure and freedom seems to have been struck just about right - there is no assault by the third party marketing attempts that blight other social networks.
I have made new friends already - and look forward to logging in each morning to see if I have new messages, comments, or further discussion among the groups I am following.
I can't help wondering how long it will be though until Vox release their API, or take on one of the plugin APIs being developed by Google and Facebook - and in one stroke ruin their platform. Let's hope they never do.
I have had my Sony Ericsson K800i for a year or so now - so you might think I would have configured it properly by now. You might be wrong.
This morning I finally bit the bullet and searched the internet to find out why I was unable to send emails - thankfully somebody else had listed the instructions to send and receive email via Google Mail - apparently I was missing a security certificate on the phone. By luck, the same guy had provided a link to the certificate - with instructions to copy it to your phone.
Thankfully we have a Macbook with bluetooth, so getting the license onto the phone was simple (although guided by blind luck and ignorance). Following that, IMAP suddenly started working on the phone, and I could send emails.
Next stop was looking in the Vox mobile settings, and configuring an email address to post into my account with. All pretty straight forward, except one of the options said something along the lines of "create new post, or just post to streams". I searched for the word "streams" in the Vox help. Nothing. Nada.
It turns out that "streams" means the "Photos" section of your account. So if you use a camera phone to take a picture and want to stick it in your Vox photos for later use, just select streams - otherwise it will become a blog post.
Be prepared for all kinds of crap to arrive in Vox via my phone. Consider yourself warned.
